Help Us Support Autism Speaks

Transcend Fitness Club and Functional Training are proud to support Autism Speaks this summer. Our very own Karly Wehrman is running a 22.5 mile challenge (5k, 10k, half marathon in ONE weekend) to support this awesome organization!

What does Autism Speaks do?

Well, first, autism, or autism spectrum disorder, refers to a range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates 1 in 59 children is on the autism spectrum.

Autism Speaks is dedicated to promoting solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the lifespan, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families through advocacy and support; increasing understanding and acceptance of autism spectrum disorder; and advancing research for causes and better interventions for autism spectrum disorder and related conditions. They empower people with autism and their families with resources, online tools and information covering the life span.

How can I support Karly and Autism Speaks?

Donate new or gently used shoes by dropping them off in the donation boxes inside both Transcend Fitness Club and Functional Training.

What kind of shoes?

“Thank you all so much for your support and generosity. This cause is very important to me as I have family members who have been diagnosed with autism. It means a lot to me to have you behind me through this journey.”

Can a Bad Workout Be a Good Thing?

In a society where everything is fast paced, priorities sometimes reversed and results are above all else, it is impossible to always come out on top. Deadlines and the closing bell have our full attention at all times. It is as if nothing else in the world matters. Falling into the trap where we begin reasoning excuses to back out of personal commitments, such as the gym, to focus more on our professional lives happens every year. We make resolutions and once 2nd quarter hits, we make excuses. Then we recommit to working out before a family vacation and once that is over, so are all hopes of visiting the club. It is a vicious cycle that club owners know all too well. Here is a news flash, it doesn’t have to be.

For years, I have watched a few people who will literally drag themselves through the front door to get a workout in. These particular people are constantly in the gym; they never miss a day. I always wondered why they simply wouldn’t give themselves a day off. The reason is so simple. By staying in a routine with working out, constant progress will always be made. Perhaps not at the rate which we consider ideal, however, there will no longer be forecasted voids of down time. Moral of the story: Make working out a habit. A bad workout is still better than no workout.
